Critter Quest - Free Roam Adventure Board Game

Introduction to the Game and the team!

Critter Quest is a board game inspired by the Game of Life, Monopoly, Dungeons and Dragons, Munchkin, Solar Quest, and Root. Players work to fulfill a quest, gathering weapons, tools, and armor to aid them on their journeys. Players can fight monsters, each other, collect money and treasure, sell items, and gain power ups. The game ends when a player manages to complete their quest and proclaim victory at the castle at the center of the board. This game is intended for players 10+ years old and requires a group of at least 3 for best flow of gameplay.

This game is a passion project created by myself and and my friends Ashely Sills, Addie Patterson, Gracen Livingston, and Conner Ayers. We all share a love of cute animals, roleplay games, and tabletop games, which inspired us to create a blend of all the games previously mentioned into one big free roam adventure game set in a fantasy land playing as little critters.

My Pieces of the Project!

As the illustrator and designer for the board, I started earlier than the rest of my team designing, since the board was what was needed first and foremost for any beta testing. I started by creating a design that could fold into fours, and sketching an extremely basic layout for the interconnecting paths across the board that players could choose to travel on.

We wanted the game to function similar to the Game of Life in that players would almost always have something to do on their turn rather than land on lots of blank spots. The colors on this first draft indicate different types of cards that can be drawn when you land on those tiles. We used this for our first round of beta testing the game, and altered gameplay after a few tests.

Inspired by the maps of Tolkien and other fantasy works, I developed the base design for the game board using a monochromatic black lineart style. I illustrated four distinct regions for the board, all which have different sorts of events and actions attributed to them.

I also used an old map texture I hand painted with watercolors to give the gameboard an old fantasy feel, a texture the rest of the team then used across their materials for the project.

I was also in charge of creating the character tiles that players would use to equip items to their characters, including descriptions of what power ups and abilities their character has, and including the artwork of the characters made by Addie

The Rulebook!

My last task was to arrange the rulebook for the game! Conner was the first person to draft the rule book, and I picked up where he left off as he worked on the box design to add all the graphics to the pages and add more text and organization to the booklet. I also illustrated the front cover to match the style of the board, and Addie did all of the coloring work.
